Freshman U.S. Representative Andrew J. Young (D.Ga.) takes a D.C.stroll with N.Y. Congressman Charlie Rangel, then chair of the Congressional Black Caucus in 1974. The U.S. Capitol looms in the background. The Atlanta Inquirer let me go to Washington to follow Rep. Young around for several days during the first months of his first term. Young expressed surprise the skinflint paper would send a reporter all the way to Washington for a story. Then I told him I'd paid for the cheapy flight myself and was staying with friends on Capitol Hill to keep expenses to a minimum. Out of sympathy, Young treated me to the creamy Navy Bean Soup in the House cafeteria.
