Jean Childs Young of Alabama married Andy Young in 1954 and her life-long mission advocating for children was never eclipsed by her more famous husband. She had studied the works of The Mahatma Gandhi in college, where she met her first pacifists. She took part in her first march protesting segregated restaurants in 1961 and she marched with husband Andy throughout the decade.
Jean Young's committment to children (including four of her own) was show in her leadership in the Atlanta schools, The Teacher Corps and appointment to chair the U.S. Commission on the International Year of the Child. One of her last activities was touring the world promoting Atlanta's bid to host the 1996 Olympic Games. She died in 1994 of liver cancer.
