The Rise of Andy Young

Andy Young and fellow Atlanta veterans of the Civil Rights Movement enjoy a joke in this photo from 1974. Before Young came to Atlanta to work with Dr. King's SCLC, Julian Bond, left, and Ben Brown, right, had been leaders in the student movement challenging local segregation. Bond and Brown had been with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) which enlisted white northern college students to join young black college organizers down South. SNCC held voter-registering Freedom Schools throughout the South in the mid 1960s. When this photo was taken, both Bond and the late Ben Brown were members of the Georgia legislature.
