Andy Young helped black voters overcome problems they'd had with Southern governors in the past to support Georgia Gov. Jimmy Carter's presidential campaign in 1976. President Carter appointed Young as U.S. ambassador to the U.N. in return, but fired him for talking to Palestinian peace seekers.
